Shell voicings keep just the notes that define the chord (root + 3rd / ♭3rd + 7th / ♭7th — or 6 / 4 in place of the 7). The 5th is dropped because it doesn't change the chord's quality. Use them to comp under a soloist, or to walk smoothly between chord changes.
